Janet L. Kayfetz - Computer Science

Dr. Janet Kayfetz has been a lecturer for the Department of Computer Science since 2003 and in 2011 she was also appointed as a lecturer for the Bren School for Environmental Science & Management. Dr. Kayfetz teaches a variety of courses that cover topics related to technical writing and technical presentation skills. Her classes are highly sought after and often will fill within minutes of becoming open for enrollment. Her nomination letter notes that "her work has had a tremendous positive impact on the quality of the writing and speaking ability of the students who have taken her courses."

Dr. Kayfetz’s extraordinary teaching ability and her dedication to teaching are reflected in the near-perfect teaching evaluations and student comments. Some of these comments include the following:

"Tour de force; wouldn’t change a thing! Janet’s enthusiasm in her subject is infectious. She’s a great instructor and motivator."

"Excellent class… This class should be required for all PhD students in the department."

"Awesome class. I think it’s one of the most important classes that a Computer Science student could have… What I learned here will be useful for the rest of my career."

This was one of the best classes I have ever taken. I loved Professor Kayfetz’s style of teaching – she is engaging, passionate, and expects great work. She was not afraid to push us beyond our comfort zones in writing and speaking, and she provided a space for all of us to grow as writers. I wish she taught more classes.

In addition to her extraordinary impact of her classroom teaching, Dr. Kayfetz is also praised for her dedication to students outside the classroom. Over the years she has volunteered hundreds of hours of her personal time to tutoring students – reviewing drafts of their papers, dissertations, and other writings, attending countless practice talks for conference presentations, proposals, and defenses. She has co-written papers with faculty and students, and she has worked with students to give presentations at conferences.

In summary, Dr. Kayfetz is an extraordinary educator with an incredible commitment to the education of UCSB students. Through her courses as well as her endless hours of volunteer work in one-on-one or small group tutoring, conference presentations, and joint publications, Dr. Kayfetz has clearly excelled in her teaching work and demonstrated an exceptional level of dedication.

For her dedication to teaching excellence Janet Kayfetz is awarded a Distinguished Teaching Award. Congratulations, Dr. Kayfetz!
