Chikako Shinagawa has taught as a lecturer in the Department of East Asian Languages & Cultural Studies since 2000. She has also served for several years as coordinator of the department’s Japanese Language Program. Ms. Shinagawa is described as “an extraordinary teacher of the Japanese language.” Her teaching evaluation scores over the past five years have always been unfailingly extraordinary. Students have consistently praised her teaching style, class organization, and interaction with students.
A representative sample of written comments from her 2014 courses includes the following praises for her teaching methods and her classes: “This was one of my favorite classes I’ve taken. I’m a senior and Shinagawa sensee was the best teacher of all time”; “I love this professor!! She presents everything clearly and makes sure everyone understands! I’ve learned SO much. This is the best course I’ve taken here at UCSB!”; “Best class! The instructor was fantastic and all students were engaged and get personal attention.” These comments are perfectly in line with what students have written in the previous several years.
Ms. Shinagawa’s classes stand out as perfectly organized and rigorous and at the same time fun and engaging. She is also credited as one of the main actors behind the growing success of the Japanese program. For her dedication to teaching excellence Chikako Shinagawa is awarded a Distinguished Teaching Award. Congratulations!
