The Academic Senate operates as a legislative body and also a system of appointed committees
run by and for the faculty. The work of the Senate is chiefly conducted through these committees
as well as through elected officers.
The Executive Council identifies and considers issues that require Senate review and acts for the Division if needed. Members are chairs of all councils and some committees.
The Faculty Legislature is comprised of representatives from academic departments and acts for the Division in all Senate matters. It is the only body that may enact legislation.
The Charges Officer and Charges Advisory Committee consider complaints of possible violation of the Faculty Code of Conduct on the part of Senate members of the Santa Barbara Division
Committee on Academic Personnel reviews and makes recommendations on expanded academic personnel actions.
The Committee on Admissions, Enrollment, and Relations with Schools sets standards for undergraduate admissions and advises the Senate and the administration regarding policy and procedures related to admissions, enrollment, access, and relations with schools.
The Committee on Committees (CoC) appoints faculty volunteers to Senate councils, committees and various administrative committees. CoC members are elected by the faculty in their respective discipline areas.
The Committee on Courses and General Education has final approval authority for the creation and modification of all undergraduate courses. The committee also acts on GE proposals and associate instructor appointments for upper-division courses.
The Committee on Diversity and Equity is charged with promoting diversity and equity on campus to ensure equal treatment of the following under-represented groups: women, ethnic minorities, individuals of diverse sexual orientations, individuals with disabilities, and other members of the campus community.
The Committee on International Education provides consultation and review on all aspects of international education and exchanges for the campus.
The Committee on Privilege and Tenure has jurisdiction over all matters affecting the privileges or the tenure of Senate members of the Santa Barbara Division; the committee considers grievance cases, disciplinary cases and early termination cases.
The Committee on Rules, Jurisdiction and Elections serves as the advisory body regarding Senate Legislation and procedures; the committee also supervises elections for Academic Senate officers.
The Council on Faculty Welfare, Academic Freedom & Awards provides consultation, initiates studies, and makes recommendations on matters concerned with faculty welfare and academic freedom. The Council also provides oversight for Academic Senate awards for research, teaching, and mentorship.
The Council on Planning and Budget provides consultation and review with regard to fiscal, capital, and academic planning matters including recommendations for division and department FTE plans.
The Council on Research and Instructional Resources provides consultation and review on all matters pertaining to research, the Library, teaching and instructional resources, and information technology. CRIR has overall responsibility for the administration of the faculty travel and research grant program.
The Faculty Executive Committee (FEC) of the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management coordinates the academic affairs of the School.
The Faculty Executive Committee (FEC) of the College of Creative Studies coordinates the academic affairs of the College.
The Faculty Executive Committee (FEC) of the College of Engineering coordinates the academic affairs of the College.
The Faculty Executive Committee (FEC) of the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education coordinates the academic affairs of the School.
The Faculty Executive Committee (FEC) of the College of Letters and Science coordinates the academic affairs of the College.
The Graduate Council sets standards for and policy on graduate education; ensures the viability and quality of graduate programs; and in consultation with appropriate parties, provides advice and consent on a large array of graduate education matters.
The Undergraduate Council sets standards for and policy on undergraduate education, participates in the review of undergraduate programs and, in consultation with appropriate parties, provides advice and consent on a large array of undergraduate education matters.
