University of California Santa Barbara

A lot is happening in the Academic Senate as our campus faces its latest challenges and opportunities. Dont let it happen without your input. Academic Senate service - an important part of the UC system of shared governance - provides a valuable opportunity for you to contribute to how our university is run and how current challenges and opportunities are met. To this end, the Committee on Committees (CoC), which works to staff all of the Academic Senate councils and committees with balanced and diverse representation drawn from UCSB's many disciplines and schools, is asking you to volunteer for committee service for the next academic year.

To volunteer, please complete the Senate Service Preference Form - it will take less than five minutes. The form includes brief descriptions of each Council or Committee, the standard meeting schedule, and the work involved. Please check all of the boxes that apply and use the comment box to rank committee interests. Please know that CoC tries to match your specific interests while also working to create balanced and diverse representation among committee members from various disciplines and schools. In creating well-rounded committees, we may not find a position for everyone who volunteers, but we will work hard to do so.

Some of you may think that you are too busy to serve on an Academic Senate council or committee; please keep in mind the many benefits to serving in the Senate. Primarily, it provides you with an important means of influencing the decisions facing our campus and the UC system. Such service also provides insights into how the UC is governed, is a great way to meet faculty from "the other side of campus" that you may not otherwise encounter and, particularly for tenured faculty, it is an important component of the service review area for merit and promotion. Finally, as more of us participate, the time required from each of us is reduced. In short, service on an Academic Senate council or committee is the right thing to do.

Please contact any of us should you have any questions about Academic Senate service. Thank you to all who volunteer and for your commitment to shared governance.
