Awards
The UCSB Academic Senate presents multiple campus-wide awards annually. The nomination call is sent to the campus community in fall quarter; nominees submit packets which are reviewed by selection committees in winter quarter; and winners are announced in spring quarter at a Faculty Legislature meeting.
Faculty Research Lecturer Award
The Faculty Research Lecturer Award is awarded annually to one faculty member determined to be the most distinguished in research or other creative achievement. The award is considered to be the highest honor the UCSB faculty can bestow on one of its members. Candidates are nominated by their peers. The recipient is selected by a committee composed of representatives from the Academic Senate Council on Faculty Welfare, Academic Freedom, and Awards, as well as past recipients of the Faculty Research Lecturer award.
The Faculty Research Lecturer receives an honorarium of $5,000 and delivers a lecture or a similarly appropriate presentation.
Faculty Diversity Award
The Faculty Diversity Award recognizes Senate and non-Senate faculty who have engaged in or promoted exceptional contributions to the advancement of diversity, equality, and justice. Nominations are judged on the basis of extraordinary efforts to promote equal access, public service, research, or mentorship on behalf of California's diverse, under represented, or underserved populations. The recipient is selected by a committee composed of representatives from the Academic Senate Committee on Diversity and Equity, as well as past recipients of the Faculty Diversity award.
One Senate or non-Senate faculty member will be honored with this distinction, which includes an honorarium of $2,000 and a framed certificate.
Harold J. Plous Award
The Harold J. Plous Award was established to honor Harold J. Plous, an Assistant Professor in UCSB's Department of Economics until his untimely death in 1957. The Harold J. Plous Award is presented annually to an Assistant Professor from the College of Letters and Science for outstanding performance and promise, as measured by creative activities and contributions to the intellectual life of the UCSB community. The awardee is selected by the Faculty Executive Committee of the College of Letters and Science. Nominations are traditionally accepted in March and the winner is announced in June.
Distinguished Teaching Award
The Distinguished Teaching Awards acknowledge the efforts of Senate faculty members who have successfully united teaching and research, as well as non-Senate faculty based on excellence in teaching and contributions to the teaching mission of the University. The recipients are selected by a committee composed of representatives from the Council on Faculty Welfare, Academic Freedom, and Awards, as well as past recipients of the Distinguished Teaching Award.
A maximum of six Distinguished Teaching Award recipients will be selected. Awardees will receive a cash award of $1,000 and a framed certificate.
Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award
Mentoring graduate students is a vital component of the mission as a research university. It includes training graduate students for careers in research and teaching, and preparing them to meet the highest professional and ethical standards as scholars and educators. The Outstanding Graduate Mentor Awards recognize the exemplary contributions of faculty to mentoring. The recipients are selected by a committee composed of representatives from the Graduate Council and Council on Faculty Welfare, Academic Freedom, and Awards, as well as past recipients of the Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award.
Up to three recipients are selected, each of whom receives an honorarium of $1,000 and a framed certificate.
Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award
Each year, teaching assistants play a vital role in enhancing the teaching mission of the University. The Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards recognize the contributions of our graduate students to teaching and learning. The recipients are selected by a committee composed of representatives from the Graduate Council and Council on Faculty Welfare, Academic Freedom, and Awards, as well as past recipients of the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award.
Up to four recipients are selected, each of whom receives an honorarium of $1,000 and a framed certificate.
